Piano and violin tuition

I teach piano and violin students of all ages and standards: school-age students, returning musicians, home-educated learners, and adults. Lessons take place at my home in Crystal Palace or virtually across the UK.

Students can have lessons after school, during the day midweek, or on Saturdays. If I’m not available, you can be added to a waiting list until a suitable slot opens up.

Piano lessons

Learning the piano can take many directions: working towards graded exams, preparing for a music scholarship, or simply playing for enjoyment. Let me know your current standard and what you want to achieve. I’ll shape lessons around those aims.

Lessons can include:

  • Hand position and coordination
  • Reading treble and bass clefs
  • Scales, chords and arpeggios
  • Pedalling, tone and expression
  • Repertoire and sight-reading

Violin lessons

Violin technique develops gradually. It takes time to feel relaxed in your posture and produce a clear, confident tone. For beginners, I get students playing music straight away and develop technique alongside the pieces they learn, rather than postponing playing until every aspect of posture and tone is established.

Lessons can include:

  • Posture and bow hold
  • Intonation and finger placement
  • Bowing technique and tone
  • Scales, position work and vibrato
  • Solo and ensemble repertoire

I will address music theory, aural skills, and preparation for ABRSM or Trinity exams with both instruments.

Who lessons are for

Adult beginners

You don’t need previous experience. I’ve taught many adult beginners to Grade 5 and beyond. I have the most availability during the day midweek. Tuition is guided by your aims: it can be for fun, technique, or working towards a grade.

Home-educated learners

Home-educated students can have more flexibility and availability with midweek lessons during the day. Lessons can be extra-curricular or work towards graded exams.

Returning learners

Lessons start by rebuilding confidence and unpicking what you know and any gaps in your knowledge. We’ll gradually work on these areas while working through music.

School-age children

Lessons are adapted to the child’s age, as this will affect their concentration span. My spaces after school are limited, but enquiries are always welcome and can be added to a waiting list if my availability doesn’t match.

Exam students

I am experienced in preparing students for ABRSM and Trinity exams. This includes Grade 5 Music Theory and scholarship preparation for secondary school.

Advanced students

Making the most of lessons at an advanced standard requires clear aims and advance planning. For example, preparing for an ABRSM diploma typically takes over a year.

Getting started

  1. Get in touch

Let me know what instrument you want to learn, your musical experience, and availability.

  2. Book an introductory lesson

A trial lesson gives us a chance to meet and discuss your goals. You’ll get an idea of my teaching approach so you can decide if you want to continue.

  3. Refine your booking

After the first lesson, let me know about any changes you want to make, such as lesson length. I’m happy to adapt my lesson approach if needed.

  4. Regular tuition

Lessons continue on a regular, weekly basis during term-time. Tuition is shaped around the student’s aim and interests, always ensuring progress.

Managing lessons through the student portal

After lessons have started, students will be sent access to an invitation-only portal that simplifies the practical side of lessons. Parents or guardians can manage the account on behalf of their child.

Lesson records

See upcoming lessons and past dates. You can make changes to lessons that are different to your usual schedule, such as booking an extra lesson before an exam.

Invoices

Invoices for lessons are sent through the platform. The lesson dates are listed in each invoice for record-keeping. You can view all previous lesson dates through your account.

Homework and feedback

Homework is listed on the portal. Students can send me text, voice or video messages if they need help or feedback between lessons.

Bookings and availability

You can book extra lessons, cancel or rearrange sessions. Students share their general availability for alternative lesson times, and receive notifications when another space opens up.
