Taking lessons
There’s no commitment after the first lesson. It’s a chance to meet me and see if we’ll be able to strike up a good learning relationship. We’ll talk through your goals, assess what you know and what needs attention, and then start the lesson proper.
Parents or carers are welcome to sit in lessons. At the end of lessons, I’ll write down homework in a notepad or the music book we’re working through. I can also send voice messages or video guidance between lessons as needed.
Pupils progress best with regular tuition. For this reason, I reserve my peak times for people who can consistently attend weekly during term-time.

What lesson length is best?
30 minutes is a good fit for younger students. Learning a musical instrument requires a lot of concentration, and we can make good progress over this duration. More advanced students would benefit from longer sessions: the pieces are more complex, and other aspects need to be covered, such as music theory and technique. Parents sometimes opt for a longer lesson if they want to combine it with their children.
Do I have to commit after the first lesson?
The first lesson gives us the opportunity to see if our learning relationship is a good fit. If you decide to continue, I teach weekly during term time and invoice in advance for 4 lessons at a time. There’s more flexibility on lesson frequency if lessons are off-peak (midweek before 3.30pm).
Can I change lesson length?
Yes, this is no problem. If you’re midway through a lesson block, we can change at the end of the block. Alternatively, I can refund/charge the difference in length if you want to change to the new duration straight away. I’m happy to discuss this with you.
Are online lessons cheaper?
No. I charge for time, so there is no difference in price. I am experienced teaching online, having done this exclusively during lockdown. I am also lucky to have perfect pitch, which means virtual music lessons are effective.
Can I have a longer lesson than 60 minutes?
Yes. If you need a specific duration, please get in touch. Explain the situation, and I’ll provide a bespoke lesson length if needed. This is sometimes required when a parent is interested in having one lesson shared across their children.
