About me

Teaching runs in my family. My mother teaches deaf children in schools to ensure they don’t fall behind. My grandfather was a headteacher of a primary school in Welwyn Garden City. I have other close relatives who worked in education. I grew up learning that an effective teacher needs to be patient and give students time to answer questions, so they can open up and be more relaxed in lessons.

I studied music from a theoretical perspective at Sheffield University before focusing on violin performance, earning postgraduate degrees here and at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. My performance career was ensemble-focused, including playing at the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall. As much as I enjoyed performing, it meant a lot to teach students and see them progress. I was fortunate to be in demand as a tutor, and this gradually became my sole profession.

I’m now focused on individual tuition. I have also taught group classes, string quartets, and chamber orchestras during my time at Merton Music Foundation. I’ve taught at numerous schools across London, including Whitehorse Manor Junior School in Croydon. My time in music services included teaching entire classes the violin during school hours. This wide variety of contexts means I can adapt effectively to different situations with students.

Ultimately, students learn with me because I am versatile, relaxed, and I enthuse them about music. I have prepared students for ABRSM and Trinity exams, secondary school scholarships, and auditions for music colleges. Some students have a particular focus, while others may be returning to their instrument as an adult, or playing just for enjoyment. I’m happy to meet all of these needs. My students typically stay with me for five to ten years, and my teaching practice has grown largely through personal recommendations.

I want to keep developing as a music teacher and a musician. I’m currently preparing for an LRSM Diploma in Piano. The repertoire I’m preparing is “Gaspard de la nuit” by Ravel, and “The Tempest” by Beethoven (Piano Sonata, No. 17). It’s a long-term project that will take me several years to build towards.

I’m also preparing for an LRSM Diploma in Music Teaching, focusing on preparing one of my students for their Grade 4 Piano exam.

Over the coming years, I am looking to build a dedicated teaching studio in my garden. This will enable me to arrange for an ABRSM examiner to examine students from my home each exam period. Students will be able to warm up in a lesson with me beforehand and take their exams in a familiar, convenient setting.
